If I Unfollow and Follow Again

I unfollowed everyone on my personal Facebook account, and it changed my life! Here's what happened.

Back effectually Nov 2016, I started taking an east-course by Ruth Soukup, called "Productivity Guide for Bloggers". I was ready to outset taking control of my time and finally go more done!

In the very outset chapter, she talked nigh distractions and how it'south so piece of cake to get caught up in all the little dings your phone makes when you lot get a new notification, whether it's from Facebook, email, or whatever else. Her challenge to u.s.a. in that offset affiliate was to turn off all notifications on our telephone, to cease those distractions in the first place.

That was simple enough; I went to my settings and turned off everything, too telephone calls and texts.

Then she told us to unfollow everyone on our personal Facebook list.

WHAT?

Facebook is how I keep in touch with my friends. It was my favorite social network; I like to meet how everyone is doing, to watch their kids abound, and stay up-to-date with all the happenings of life.

Only then I realized that unfollowing was not the same equally unfriending.

When you lot unfollow someone on Facebook, you lot stay friends just their condition updates won't show upwardly in your news feed anymore; you lot take to manually visit their profile to see what they postal service.

It still gave me feet to recollect about it; what'll I do if I can't come across what my friends are doing?

Ruth gave it the term FOMO- Fright Of Missing Out. And it's real, people. Have you lot tried going a 24-hour interval, or even a few hours, without checking your Facebook feed? Once you get back, y'all find yourself scrolling for miles just to brand certain you didn't miss annihilation.

And I was guilty of that, fifty-fifty as far equally checking my phone every 10 minutes or so only to see what was new.

Only that was sucking away my fourth dimension. The early morning hours, which were supposed to be spent writing posts and doing weblog work, were at present filled with looking through pictures of cute babies and strongly-worded political posts.

I had my phone virtually me at all times, checking my feed while playing with Allison and essentially ignoring her as I got caught upwardly in the news. I was tired of my time beingness taken away from me, and then I took the plunge.

I went through my list, and one at a time, I unfollowed every person on my friends list, and every page that I Liked, except for 2 or iii blogging pages. I put my family unit on the Close Friends list, so that every time they posted, I would only go the little notification. And my news feed suddenly looked very empty.

After a few days, though, I immediately noticed some changes in my life, and now I know I won't ever go back to the way things were. Here's what happened:

I stopped mindlessly browsing

You know what I'm talking about. You sit down to bank check something and notice you have a Facebook app notification, so you await at information technology, but then something on your newsfeed catches your eye.

And and so yous get stuck, scrolling down and downward because every other update is merely then interesting, and of a sudden you look upward and realize xx minutes have passed and you have no idea how it happened.

That was so me, and information technology actually bothered me simply didn't know how to(and didn't want to) fix information technology. At present that I've unfollowed everyone, I can't mindlessly browse if there's nothing on my newsfeed to distract me!

I stopped feeling negative

I noticed that sometimes, after a mindless browsing session, I got a little depressed or aroused, because I read Facebook posts I didn't similar. Someone posted a politically-charged bluster, or a link to a "news" story that has zero facts.

And don't even get me started on the comments on some of those. Never, always read the comments. I've e'er said that you'll know the true graphic symbol of someone by reading what they put in comments on Facebook.

Instead of reading them and fueling the acrimony it gave me, I just stopped following those people and the problem went away. At that place was a major divergence in my mood; I experience much happier now that I don't have to worry about what I might see on my newsfeed.

I became more productive

Practise y'all realize how much more time you have when you don't browse Facebook? Ten minutes here, five minutes there… it'south similar you magically gain an hr in your day!

I experience like now I can practise blog piece of work without lark, and have found other productive ways to spend my fourth dimension- like reading educational articles and things to improve myself. I don't really learn anything on Facebook- except that people can be mean, and that what you see in those happy pictures isn't always what it seems.

I promise my Facebook friends don't read this and get offended. Information technology has nothing to do with non wanting to encounter my friends anymore, and I really exercise intendance. If I want to come across how a friend is doing, I manually go to the person'due south contour page and check the first few updates.

I honey them all, I really practise; I was just as well easily distracted and needed to do something to better myself and my family in the long run.

And to be honest? I don't miss scrolling through my feed anymore. I idea information technology would be harder, but it'southward no big deal now.

What Happens When You Un-follow Someone on Facebook?

If you lot feel similar your productivity is suffering and you need a change, attempt un-following your friends and pages. It's not permanent, and no ane will know you did it. Here's how:

Can a Facebook friend see if yous unfollow them?
